Essential Art Galleries in Dorset and East Devon

With some of the most striking scenery in Britain, it should probably come as little surprise that East Devon and Dorset also inspire some of the most striking art. The ever changing seasonal moods of the region, along with an atmosphere of quiet seclusion, make our pretty coastal towns a  major draw for resident and visiting artists alike. Whether you simply want a coffee break and a leisurely browse, a special gift for a friend or to invest in something unique and beautiful, there is nowhere quite like the Jurassic Coast! Here are a handful of excellent galleries you must pay a visit to next time you're with us:

Marine House and Steam Gallery (Beer EX12 3JB ): Informal, innovative and always with a surprise or three in store, this is one of the best independent galleries in Devon. From traditional oils, to eye-opening sculpture, ceramics and jewellery we guarantee you will find something to covet in the displays here. With scenic walks and some charming local places to eat and drink, Beer is a great place for any art lover to stop off. Further details: www.marinehouseatbeer.co.uk

Works by Peter Barker (above) and Anita Klein (Below), typify the quality and variety at Beer's excellent Steam Gallery.

Malthouse and Courtyard Galleries (The Town Mill, Lyme Regis DT7 3PU): You might associate this Jurassic Coast town with the ancient beauty of fossils and rocks, but it is also a superb place for anyone with an interest in contemporary art. Founded in 2010, this pretty site is a hub for a whole collection of local artists including some of the very best in the region. Throw in top quality crafts and locally produced food and drink with a historic mill and you have all the makings of a perfect afternoon! www.townmill.org.uk Also see www.townmillartsguild.com for current events and highlights.

Kennaway House  (Sidmouth EX10 8NG): Another hidden art gem, this elegant seaside town has art galleries galore and so much to discover. Just outside the centre of the town, however, you’ll find one of the most interesting selections of all in this community run hub of local creativity. Established artists run shoulders with raw, emerging local talent here, while you’ll also find some of the most interesting short courses in East Devon, from life drawing to novel writing. The site has full current listings: www.kennawayhouse.org.uk

Work by talented local artists such as Amy Cummins (See more of her work here), make Sidmouth's Kennaway House well worth a visit.

The Thelma Hubert Gallery (Honiton EX14 1LT): An ever changing variety of art in all major forms, this is one of the best places in east Devon to showcase the region’s current and past talent. Current highlights include a fascinating retrospective look at the work of pioneering early 20th century photographer Karl Blossveldt. This is also an excellent centre to meet artists in person, or find inspiring workshops. Keep an eye on the site for forthcoming highlights: www.thelmahulbert.com
